To the left is a demo movie (Macromedia Flash format) to show you a sample of registering your nickname. In this presentation, we are using the pozIRC (click HERE to download) chat software interface (JAVA interface uses the same commands, just the layout is different). |
www.AIDSchat.org (HIV/AIDS support chatrooms)
has a nice feature called Nickserv, which allows you to
'register' your nickname (you can only register the nickname you
currently have), so nobody else can use it (also, you cannot
private message other chatters until you have registered your nickname). The command
to do this is
/msg
nickserv register password email (it is a good
idea to do this in a private message window to yourself). It's
important to use a password you'll remember, and to put in a
real email address (DaveyBoy will not spam it or give it out).
Commands are run through your web browser where you are chatting
in our HIV chat rooms.
Once you register your nickname, you'll have to identify yourself every time you log in (you will be messaged a reminder to log in) or change your nickname to the registered one. The command to do that is /msg nickserv identify password (it is a good idea to do this in a private window to yourself). Once you do that, you'll get a message that tells you you've been identified.
To prevent the nickserv from becoming filled with unused old names, if you don't log on for 45 days (3 months) your nickname will be reclaimed, and you'll have to register it again.
It makes it easier for everyone to remember you from previous conversations if you keep the same nick
Allows that nick to be used only by you (it protects that nickname from being used by others as only you should know the password). Sometimes nicknames are used by others (hard to be totally orginal), I bet 30 different people have used the nick David in the last 3 months alone!
Registering also makes it easy for DaveyBoy to set automatic op privileges (as soon as you join any of our AIDS chat rooms, you will get channel operator status, the +o setting) to regular returning members (OPs let you ban and kick trouble makers).
Not sure if you are already registered? Well if you are registered with NickServ already, everytime you join the chat server (Server irc.aidschat.org on port #6667 if you are using mIRC or pIRCh) and change to your regularly used nick, NickServ will message you saying that is a protected nick. You then have to identify yourself to be able to keep the nickname.
To open a private message window to yourself, type /msg yourNICK Talking to myself
IRC has a vast range of commands and abilities, but most of them aren't needed by most of us. There are a few that are important to know though, and you might find yourself using a lot.
